Random Sunny Sunday

Sunday was a strange day indeed, the sun was out so it was rude not to make an early start, no one seemed to forget about the clocks going back either, so first spot of the day was the hard to skate Wivenhoe swirly banks. Sandy, Gonz, Dave, Veran and Russ then decided to hit up a few spots that had been noted in Witham, after skating a couple of them it was decided to make the most of the sunshine at Witham park till it got dark. Everyone had fun on the spine and small quarter and Sanj took care of the one man mini ramp destruction duties, all in all a random but fun day!

Steve and Russ took a trip up to Milton Keynes during half term to meet up with Southend's finest Ben, Jay and Will. Despite the wet weather the plaza was dry enough to skate and a good session went down resulting in a few tricks in the bailgun! Enjoy.

Dark Clouds...

Russ, Steve, Gonz and Dave dodged the clouds yesterday just enough to skate a spot or two in Braintree and Harlow. First up was a new/old spot in Braintree with loads of potential. Dave put down an awesome trick and Russ logged it in soul catcher. Next up was the legendary Harlow paddling pool. First time for Dave and Steve. This spot is so so good. Everyone put down some lines and tricks and everyone had a trick or two in the bail gun just before the heavens opened signalling home time. Both spots are due a revisit asap.

Tambini

This weekend just gone saw two milestone birthdays pass. Steve Bailey turned 17 and Welsh homie Paul Tambini turned the big 3 - 0. You boys are getting old. Paul had a fancy dress party in Cardiff, very boozy. Another big birthday coming up soon for someone...

Dan Kircher, Up in Colchester

Hands Up!

New Zealand's Monster Network long time homie Dan Kircher was in Colchester this past weekend for a quick visit. When not being the creative video mastermind behind 09 (whose most recent video production 'Forays' will be released through The Story FilmMakers Guild in the next couple of weeks), editing Manual Magazine, discussing the finer points of the history of Girl/Chocolate with LBD in Wellington or teching up manual variations he can fair put away a drink or two in Smiths, The Hogs and Twisters. Ruler!

On Saturday while we were at Mudchute skatepark Gorm was taking some photos with his digi SLR on the sly, this is the awesome result of that and the rest of his day's photography and editing. If you frame by frame you can see everyone!

Eastenders, Without the Drama

Russ, Gonz, Ben and Steve hooked up with some of London's finest on Saturday. Gorm, Ray, Badger and Dave Turner were already tearing up Mudchute skatepark when we got there. The place is amazing and super fun. From there we moved around to a bunch of different East End spots in London including some bank to walls, the curved ledges down by the Barrier, the marble ledges Chewy kills, and then later some more marble ledges in the city centre, ending the double shift 12 hour day with a couple of pints. You can't beat pushing around city streets at night either. It was a great day out, great friends, great spots and great weather...plus we got somef great footage too here and there that'll be cropping up in a variety of projects in the next 6 months. A big thanks to the Bulletclip and the 0800 Gay Shoes Crew Southern Chapter!

New Zealand/Colchester Hookup

Sam Wright (OG Colchester legend) and his lovely lady Zoe are travelling around New Zealand in a van. Having lived and worked in Auckland for a couple of years they're understandably a bit homesick and in a few weeks they'll be heading back to Colchester, but before they leave they're doing a grand tour of the country by van, seeing the sights and skating the parks as they go. Their route has taken them down the west coast of the North Island, all around the spectacular South Island, and now back to Wellington (at the very south of the North Island) via ferry.

They arrived in Wellington on Friday evening. I headed down to the park after work to meet Sam. It was so good to see an Essex head, an English skater with the heart for skateboarding that you take for granted back home, but that we both agreed is less common in other corners of the world. As luck would have it our housemate was away for the weekend so we were able to offer Sam and Zoe a bed for the night away from their van, and we chilled the evening away with a few beers.

Saturday morning Sam and Zoe checked out the city, then in the afternoon we took them out to the world-famous Chocolate Fish cafe in Scorching Bay. This place was the favourite watering hole of many a hobbit back when they made those movies. We drove round the beautiful coastline, then into Island Bay to skate the park there. We had a cool little session, both trying to get nice lines hopping over the hips. Sam took a liking to the stacked blocks, learning wallie manuals on the top one. I ended up snapping my baseplate (which was cracked from a replacing a busted kingpin) to end my day (boo hoo)- but it's the excuse I needed to setup a whole new ride with the Harmony board I picked up from England in the summer (hoorah!).

Sam and Zoe have headed off for further adventures up the east coast today. They said they were stoked to have the true Wellington experience from hanging out with us locals, and we were equally stoked to have some lovely, decent Essex folk come knock at our door. So bon voyage to Sam and Zoe, and to everyone back home with itchy feet - get yourself over here and experience this city with us!

"Anyone know where my body is?"

(8.9MB, quicktime)

Probably the best spot Essex has ever had, the old toy factory in Eastwood, Southend. We used to make the trip down from Chelmsford quite a bit back then, this trip in the winter of 1995 was one of many. A couple of tricks from this day made it in to Network Neighbourhood released the following September and it was during the footage search for the We Are boxset that all this other footage from the day was discovered...
